Medical students are five times more likely to have depression than the general population. Chronic sleep deprivation, stress, competition, trauma are just some of the factors supporting this trend. When one of the study's lead authors, a psychiatrist, told me that many of the medical students seeking his help said that they felt alone – like they were the only ones struggling – a lightbulb went off.
As studies have shown this to be a fairly common trend across all stages of medical training, I created Happy Doctors to test a theory of mine: that by stimulating an open, supportive, no-BS conversation about medicine and medical training, the perception of 'feeling alone' would diminish. If a happy, healthy physician workforce wasn't incentive enough, it's the ability to heal patients to the full potential that will benefit.
