Founded in January 2017, the Happy Doctors project is a social good initiative that leverages the powers of social technology and storytelling to diminish mental health stigma and promote well-being among medical students and doctors. It's Instagram account, @happydoctors, has attracted more than 20,000 highly engaged followers to-date (noteworthy following includes TED Med, UPenn Medicine), along with notice from medical institutions, like AACOM and STAT News.
Sample of social movement initiative, strategy involving transparency into medical culture.

"When I first started, I was terrified—but, each day gets better. It doesn't mean that you'll figure out every key clinical detail, but you'll start to figure out how best to solve problems, and this is the key! Today, the Emergency Room has gone from that scary place I first encountered, to a friendly one, where I get to become a part of many people's lives. It's an honor to be a physician, and I try not to forget it." -Dr. Darien Sutton @darienmalcolm, emergency medicine resident | #happydoctors □

“Even at a very young age, I knew that medicine was my calling. I still can’t imagine doing anything else! I love my job as a facial plastic surgeon because I have this incredible opportunity, every day, to help patients put their best face forward. A career in medicine is so rewarding but certainly not without its unique physical, mental, emotional, and financial challenges. My advice is this: find your passion(s) and seek it with effort, humbly celebrate the good, learn from the tough, thank those who help you along the way and get rid of whatever is toxic and holding you back, from doing (the best version of) you. And remember, stress is a response; you have the ability to control it!” -Dr. Leslie Kim, facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon | #happydoctors ?

"I have had a number of random jobs throughout my academic career in an attempt to stay afloat. I kind of fell into modeling when I got scouted while catering in Montreal, but It was not until I moved to New York and signed with Ford that things really took off. It has definitely not been easy to have a job during medical school and I do get asked what my secret is or how I possibly have the time to do both. Unfortunately, the truth is I don't have a ‘life-hack’ or ‘secret’ that makes it easy (I wish I did). It does help that my agents at Ford are amazing and have allowed me to prioritize med school and work with my ridiculous schedule. I am the type of person though that if I am given an opportunity to do something I am willing to do whatever it takes. So if I have to wake up at 4 am to go to the gym for two hours, then go to class for four hours, followed by two auditions downtown during my lunch break, then back uptown for another 4 hours of class, and then downtown again for more auditions before going to the library to study for a few hours before bed every day. I will do it. If I have to work on every weekend/holiday or change all my hospital shifts to night shifts so I can work during the day, I will do it. So far so good." -Adam, med student (yr. 4) | #happydoctors □
